Bluenoser, IMHO the numbers that go across the chamber have nothing to do with the serial number.

I have a 1905-R that has the numbers on the barrel in the normal location that match the numbers under the butt-plate. It also has a different four digit number that goes across the chamber similar to your rifle. I don`t know what it means, but it is not a serial number.

That is interesting and would explain the difference in numbers.  However, this rifle has no "other" serial number on the bbl or receiver.  Is it unusual for a Ross sporting rifle to not have a serial number on the bbl/receiver while having it on the stock and butt plate?  Are there other known examples?

The serial number would be found on the left side, on the barrel, in front of the receiver, just above the stock line.

Look closely as the numbers are very small. It would not be the first time someone has missed them.

If there is no number there, the barrel is most likely a replacement, or it was scrubbed.

Ross did offer a re-barreling service. The assembly number could have been reapplied then, as it would have been properly fitted.

There is definitely no serial number, other than the one lightly stamped across the front of the reinforce, on either the barrel or the receiver.  Although the possibility is there, I really don't believe the barrel has been replaced or scrubbed.  If it had been scrubbed, there would have to be some slight change in the profile, and there is none.
Are there other Ross sporting rifles out there with no serial number on the bbl or receiver?  If there are, do they have the same assembly number on the bbl and the receiver?  Huh
Any and all comments are appreciated.
